Presentation Title: (TBA)

Ramifications of the second law of thermodynamics on sustainability

Abstract:

The 2 nd law of thermodynamics deals with the non-conserved entities of entropy and exergy as well as quality. The 2 nd -law efficiency defines perfection, and helps us quantify how close we are to perfection. A process with a 2 nd -law efficiency of 100% is thermodynamically perfect. As such, it involves no entropy generation, no exergy destruction and thus no waste of resources. Therefore, the 2 nd law is closely related to the concepts of sustainability, green practices, effectiveness, efficiency, and performance. The concept of 2 nd -law efficiency has important implications on enterprises such as technology development and innovation activities to assess efficiency and effectiveness, and the best utilization of resources. Energy efficiency and the harvesting of renewable energy are also associated with the 2 nd law. In this presentation, energy conservation, renewable energy and sustainability are examined from the 2 nd -law point of view. Then the 2 nd -law concepts are applied to technology development and innovation activities to assess their efficiency and effectiveness and thus the best utilization of resources.
