Presentation Title:

Collective and efficient geothermal heating and cooling for Thomas More Innovation park in GEEL (Belgium)

Abstract:

Thomas More is a union of university colleges within the KU Leuven Association. It offers students innovative professional higher education in close cooperation with the professional field. Through its leading education, application-oriented research and services, it is an engine of regional development. The Geel campus of Thomas More wishes to develop an adjacent site into an innovative business park, named ‘Innovation Park Thomas More’. The aim is to develop a thoroughly innovative and renewable energy supply. Thomas More is currently comparing the various possibilities for realising this. This study provides an insight into the technical-economic-ecological aspects of implementing a clean technology of cleantech, namely a geothermal energy system, as an alternative to traditional heating and cooling technologies. Geothermal energy systems are not new; in the meantime, there are already some 300 large (read not private) applications in Belgium. The advanced and unique feature of the solution suggested here is the development of a collective geothermal energy concept with a 4th generation heat network.
